ABORIGINAL
COMMUNITIES
On October 3, 1873, the Ojibway Nation and Queen Victoria
entered into an agreement known as Treaty 3. The treaty covers a large part
of what is now northwestern Ontario and a small part of eastern Manitoba.
Treaty 3 also provided for rights for the Metis and other Ojibway through a
series of adhesions signed over the next year. Twenty eight First Nations
communities make up Treaty 3.
Those communities closest to the proposed development sites
include:
-

The Ground Council of Treaty 3 at its website
www.gct3.net dealt with emerging issues in resource development by
posting the following:
“In
recent years however, the Canadian government recognized that changes to the
Constitution in 1982, supported by recent Supreme Court of Canada decisions,
clearly establishes that the jurisdiction of Anishinaabe government
continues to exist. Therefore, the Anishinaabe Nation in Treaty 3 maintains
rights to all lands and water in the Treaty 3 Territory, commonly referred
to as Northwestern Ontario. Accordingly, any development in the Treaty 3
Territory such as, but not limited to, forestry, mining, hydro, highways and
pipeline systems that operate in the Treaty 3 Territory require the consent,
agreement and participation of the Anishinaabe Nation in Treaty 3.”
Bending Lake Iron Group has a knowledgeable Aboriginal
Liaison Team who are willing to openly discuss any questions or concerns
with Aboriginal communities based on protocols and laws such as The Great
Earth Law and/or the updated Ontario Mining Act. |
